Happy President’s Day

Breakfast always looks downright “presidential” around The Steamboat House.    This morning, we had fresh pineapple & wild blueberries, home-made apple cinnamon coffee cake, white cheese & sausage strata, and home made biscuits with jam.   And how was YOUR breakfast?  :)

Thank you, Galena Guests!

We are truly blessed to have such great guests.   This note was posted on our Facebook page on December 1 by Jen Domke.    Thank you so much, Jen!

“This was by far the best “hotel” experience we have ever had.   Better than any B&B we’ve ever stayed in and cleaner and even nicer than a few 5-star hotels we’ve stayed in!!  Glen and Char are amazing hosts, they make an absolutely DELICIOUS breakfast each morning, and the inn was just SO cozy and inviting.   I did not want to go home!  We will DEFINITELY be coming back, and recommending to family and friends for years to come.   Thanks you guys for a great weekend.”

We feel so honored and grateful.

Cellar views

Many guests of The Steamboat House ask us about the mysterious wooden door in the hillside behind the mansion.  It is a rather elaborate root cellar–a 20-foot hallway leads to an awesome brick curved ceiling leads to a round room with a brick domed ceiling.    There is another room with a wooden floor which was used for ice.   Here are a couple of pictures of the structure.

We love referrals at our Galena inn!

We are so pleased when our guests send their friends and relatives to stay with us.   Here are the Nyhus cousins,  who were referred to us by their family.   They were such fun to be with.

Galena celebrates Fall

One of our favorite times of year is Fall, especially Oktoberfest!  To help us kick off our Fall/Winter season, the Little German from Schmitt Sohne wines stopped by to say Hi!

The Little German and friends at breakfast

The Little German gives a "thumbs up" to wine time!

But that’s not all.   In November, visit us for Noveau Wine weekend, an Old Fashioned Christmastime (featuring the arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the Christmas tree), the annual Mistletoe Ball, and Christmastime in Galena with Living Windows.     Kick some leaves, sample treats in local confectionaries, pick pumpkins, take a hot air balloon ride, walk along the levy, enjoy world class restaurants, and return to your cozy guestroom with fireplace.   Is there anything better?

Tour of Historic Galena Homes

One of our very favorite events!!

45th Annual Tour of Homes Sept. 29 & 30 Showcases Historic Galena;

Saturday Cocktail Party Gives Entree into a Sixth Private Residence

From cozy miners’ cottages to grand Queen Annes, Galena’s incredible architecture will take center stage during the 45th Annual Tour of Historic Galena Homes.  Autumn is always a popular time to visit scenic Galena, but add the chance to tour inside five private historic buildings and the lure becomes irresistible.  Preservation, interior decorating, antiques and history are featured elements of the popular event hosted by the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society.  The guided tour runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine both Saturday and Sunday, September 29 & 30, 2012.  Ticket holders may ride a free shuttle bus between houses on Saturday only; on Sunday, they provide their own transportation.  Tour tickets include free admission to the Galena & U. S. Grant Museum on Saturday and Sunday, where visitors can enjoy the new “Ghosts of the Grants” presentation, a special exhibit called “Grant: Friends, Family and Foes” and the iconic Thomas Nast painting “Peace in Union.”

The September Tour of Historic Galena Homes is sponsored by the Galena – Jo Daviess County Historical Society. Tickets are $17; children under 10 are free with an adult.  Tickets and maps are available tour weekend at the Old Train Depot Visitor Information Center at 100 Bouthillier St., the DeSoto House Hotel at 230 S. Main St., the Galena & U. S. Grant Museum at 211 S. Bench St, the Gateway to History at 403 S. Main Street, and any home on the tour. Advance tickets (non-refundable) are available at the Museum, or phone 815-777-9129 to purchase by credit card. The Galena – Jo Daviess County Historical Society operates the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, 211 S. Bench Street (open 9-4:30 daily); the Gateway to History, 403 S. Main Street (open 9-5 daily through October and Fri-Mon from November through April), and the Old Blacksmith Shop, 245 N. Commerce Street (open 10-4, Fri-Mon through October).  For more information: 815-777-9129, www.galenahistorymuseum.org.

About 2012 Tour Homes

This year’s tour includes two fine Queen Anne houses built just a decade apart.  One was the first Galena residence to be wired for electricity; the other is a hilltop house with windows and porches overlooking historic downtown and the Galena River Valley. Two 1830s two-story miners’ cottages on quaint Dewey Avenue will be on the tour; they have been added onto over the years in very different ways.  One now resembles a turn-of-the-century frame cottage, and the other is now called “Seven Gables House” in homage to its interesting roofline.  An 1835 Greek Revival-style brick cottage on the Capt. David G. Bates mansion property is the fifth Tour home.  It was likely built as an in-law home, as it has 10.5-foot ceilings, a feature that would have not be found in servant’s quarters.

Saturday Evening Cocktail Reception at Historic Capt. Bates Home

New in 2012 will be an exclusive Cocktail Reception at the grand Captain David G. Bates home at 1203 Third Street.  This 13-room private home, a stone mansion formerly known as the DeZoya B&B, will be open only for the cocktail party, Saturday evening, September 29, from 5 to 8 pm.  The exclusive, limited ticket will cost $50 and include the reception plus one Home Tour ticket.   For tickets: 815.777-9129.
