Subscribe to our BlogOpening for business this week (or VERY shortly), is the Galena Brewing Company!  Although they have already been producing beers under contract through a brewery in Wisconsin, the operation has been moved to Galena and is the first in-town brewery in many years!  Produced by the brewery at this time are the Fevre River Ale which is a classic hefeweizen, lightly hopped, with a smooth finish and clove and banana overtones and Miners Treasure, which is a mellow, caramel, amber ale designed to warm the heart, and satisfy the thirst.  Other beers will also be produced and guests are invited to visit the brewery and taste these luscious home town beers.   What a great day for Galena!

Congratulations to Galena!
Our praise to the City of Galena for its fast and efficient manner of dealing with the recent floodwaters.  By Sunday night, the river was down, sidewalks were washed, and there was no lingering effect from what was a huge flood.  Although a few Jo Daviess County businesses were closed over the weekend, the Galena Cellars Winery Vineyard (http://www.galenacellars.com) the Alpine Slide at Chestnut Mountain (http://www.chestnutmtn.com), and the other county attractions are again open.

Galena IL River Flood, July 2010
Almost all guests to our Galena Il B&B ask, “Do they ever close those big floodgates at the entrance to downtown Galena?” Â Here are some photos to illustrate the answer.

Tourists climbed the levy, took photos and really enjoyed seeing the Galena River as it looked back in the 1800′s. Â For this weekend, it was an additional tourist attraction!
The town went about its business as usual, with Galena shops and attractions open and busy, but the Galena River attracted everyone’s attention and was the #1 topic of conversation around Galena.

Romantic Galena Getaway

Summertime in Galena IL!
It’s warm, it’s sunny, and Galena is filled with fun and exciting things to do.   Today we received new brochures on the area wineries and they are FANTASTIC.  Gorgeous scenery, great outdoor areas, and fun. Dennis, of Iowa Wine Tours, does a great job and he’ll pick you up right here at The Steamboat House.  With at least 3 wineries as part of the tour, and lunch included, our guests love having Dennis do the driving so they can enjoy the day.   It’s a wonderful way to appreciate the Galena & Jo Daviess area (and drink some exceptional wine along the way!)

At this time of year, we really love our gardens. The flowers are in bloom, the weeds are (for the most part) gone, and things look great.Special thanks to Sue Slusarek for her continuing advice, and to the Olsons for sending us our new oriole feeder!
