One of the absolutely BEST parts of being an innkeeper is the great folks you meet. Last week, regular guests the Clarks and Scullys taught us about Farkle, a great dice game. It can be played anywhere, and our guests enjoyed their game on the porch, in the gazebo, and in the library. Of course, the level of fun is directly related to the players, and these four people really have a great time together.

It’s not to early to start planning for a Galena Getaway in November. The 26th annual Wine Noveau Festival is November 19 & 20 and features horse-drawn wagon deliveries and afternoon wine & cheese parties. Special Noveau luncheons are being held at selected restaurants all over Galena and there is a Noveau Reception with complimentary appetizers and live entertainment at Benjamins (http://www.benjaminsgalena.com).

Romantic Galena IL wineries

So many wineries in Galena; so little time! We’ve already mentioned the excellent Galena Winery, but did you know that there are many others nearby? One of our favorites is the Rocky Waters Winery (http://www.rockywaters.net), with its gorgeous views and great porch where you can enjoy a glass of fine wine in the peace and quiet of the Galena Countryside.

Also close by is the Massbach Ridge Winery (http://www.massbachridge.com), another fine Galena winery. Although a bit smaller, the views are still spectacular and the owners knowledgeable and happy to show you around.

Stone Cliff Winery (http://www.stonecliffwinery.com) is right across the Mississippi from Galena — right on the riverfront in Dubuque. Above Stone Cliff is a great restaurant known as the Star (http://www.dbqstar.com) (named after the Star Brewery building in which it is located). For those of you who have visited Galena IL in the past, you may remember the Backstreet Steakhouse. These are the same owners and their new restaurant is of the same fine quality as the Backstreet.

Breakfast in Galena

So many guests have enjoyed the Blueberry French Toast at our Galena Bed and Breakfast that we decided to post it on our blog.

Grease a 9 x 13 inch pan. Cube 1 loaf of home made cinnamon or blueberry bread (you can substitute bakery bread if you prefer) and place in pan. In a large bowl, mix 8 eggs, 2 cups milk, 3/4 cup brown sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, remove from refrigerator 1/2 hour before baking. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and distribute 1 pint of fresh or frozen blueberries over bread in pan. Return to oven for about 10 more minutes or until set. Do not overbake. Serve with powdered sugar.

Weekend Galena events

Hi everyone. Another favorite event for visitors to Galena is the Art Festival, which is this weekend — August 14 & 15 — at the Old Market House. Local artists will display their wares in a historically-inspired setting. It’s promising to be a beautiful day in Galena.

Also this weekend is the continuing grand opening of the Galena Brewery! (http://www.galenabrewery.com) Stop by and enjoy a cold one amid a day of shopping at the many sidewalk sales!

Looking for some Galena entertainment? The Galena Art Theater invites you to experience ythe golden age of radio. Three cases are told by the famous Dr. Watson. Tickets are available at the door at historic Turner Hall. (http://www.TurnerHall.com) The theater presentation is August 13 & 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Docent-guided tours of the Galena History Museum will also be offered this weekend. (http://www.galenahistorymuseum.org) Stop in and make sure to take in the 2 short movies about Galena’s history. You’ll learn about Daniel Smith Harris, who built The Steamboat House in 1855, and who was one of the most legendary steamboat captains on the Mississippi, and you’ll learn about the connection between Abraham Lincoln and Galena in a short narrated film (which shows Lincoln speaking from the library in The Steamboat House!
